Windows 11 is only a few months away from its public release. When Windows 11 is released in the last quarter of 2021, it will be a free update for eligible Windows 10 PCs.
A significant percentage of Windows 10 users eagerly await an upgrade to Windows 11. Many users whose PCs are compatible with Windows 11 want to know if their Windows 10 PCs will automatically upgrade to Windows 11 when it becomes available later this year.
When will Microsoft start upgrading Windows 10 PCs to Windows 11 for free?
Windows 11 RTM will be released to the public in October or November 2021. According to Microsoft, the Windows 10 updates will roll out at the end of 2021 and continue until 2022.
This means that Windows 10 PCs eligible for the free update will receive Windows 11 by the end of 2021. However, as seen during the free update program for Windows 10, Microsoft could deploy Windows 11 for several months. Therefore, you may not receive the Windows 11 update immediately after launch.

Do Windows 10 PCs automatically upgrade to Windows 11?
Windows 11 is a free update for Windows 10 PCs that meet the minimum hardware requirements of Windows 11. PCs that support Windows 11 will be notified via the Windows Update service when Windows 11 is available for their computer.
To be more specific, your Windows 10 installation will not be automatically upgraded to Windows 11 without your permission. Instead, you need to click on the Windows 11 update notification and click on the update button to start downloading and installing Windows 11. As you may already know, most Windows 10 drivers also work on Windows 11.
On your Windows 10 computer, after Windows 11 starts, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update page and click the Check for Updates button to check if Windows 11 is available for your computer.
Please note that running the most recent version of Windows 10 is one of the requirements to receive the free update. Therefore, make sure you are using the most recent version of Windows 10. Microsoft is expected to release 21H2 around October and we recommend that you upgrade your Windows 10 installation to 21H2 once it is released.
